Minnesota State Parks: Gooseberry Falls

Nestled on the shore of Lake Superior, Gooseberry Falls State Park is an incredible stop on a weekend getaway for anyone in the Midwest or a fun adventure for those coming from afar. Gooseberry Falls State Park is just north of Duluth Minnesota and about three hours from Minneapolis.

The incredible waterfalls and stunning views of Lake Superior make this an all-in-one stop.

One of the many wonderful things about Gooseberry falls is that there is something for everyone. Even those wanting a short trek can get plenty of bang for their buck. The lower portion of the trail loops down near the lake and can be walked in less than a mile. Even the short trip can get you views of the lower falls and Lake Superior. If you’re looking for something a little more, hiking the upper loop will treat you to more (larger) falls and get you in and out of the forest.

  • Superior hiking trail and Gitchi-Gami State trail both go through the park, so this may just be one stop on your way!

Although we didn’t camp there, Gooseberry state park offers some beautiful campsites. Book ahead of time!

We had a great time at Gooseberry falls state park and will definitely be there again. It was fun to walk through the shallow areas and see the spectacular views.

What you’ll need:

  • Even though this may be a short trip, I would suggest wearing good shoes for walking and hiking.
  • In the summer, there are plenty of opportunities to get in the water and near the falls, so if you’re planning on being at the park for a while a dry pair of socks may be a good idea.
  • Money for parking (7$) -This is for a day pass, more information here
  • Water bottle
  • The wind off of Lake Superior can be a little cool, so bring layers (you can always take them off, but it sucks to wish you had brought more!)
