Minnesota State Parks: Jay Cooke

We hadn’t originally planned on going to Jay Cooke State Park when we went up to North Shore Lake Superior. After a long day of sightseeing the North Shore (Gooseberry falls, Lighthouse, Palisade Head, and the Black Sand Beach) we were lounging at our campsite. One of our “neighbors” in a sporty Airstream came over to chat with us. Residents of the area and annual celebrators of the Duluth summertime, they suggested we check out Jay Cooke State Park.

I’m so glad we did!

This hidden gem was wonderful and a great stop on the road to shake out our legs before the long drive home.

You don’t have to go very far to get some awesome views. Starting with the drive through the state park, you wind in and out of the foliage catching glimpses of the St. Louis river and the incredible grey rock. The river winds through exposed bedrock. For more information regarding the  geology of the park, check out the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

Just inside the park, there’s a beautiful swinging bridge over the St. Louis River that makes for a great photo op. Once across there are several paths through the park, pick your distance! You can go as short or as far as you would like. The trail through the trees opens up to areas where you can see the river and explore the red and grey rock formations.

We spent just under two hours here!

What you’ll need:

  • This hike can be as strenuous as you would like it to be. If you plan on climbing on the rocks, I would suggest wearing supportive boots or shoes with lots of tread. If you would prefer to stick to the dirt paths, you may be good with a more casual shoe.
  • Although this park is only 30 minutes from Duluth, being off the lake and in the forest there is more shelter from the wind.  Unlike parks near the water, there is a little less chilly wind. I would still suggest bringing layers just in case!
  • Having water is always a good option!
